There are two ways to mount a commercial solar panel to a roof. Ballasted racking uses weights, typically cement blocks, to hold the panel in place. This works well for flat roofs. The Federal Solar Investment Tax Credit (ITC) applies to both residential and commercial solar panel installations. The Inflation Reduction Act, passed in 2022, increases and extends these credits.

Until 2033, all photovoltaic systems earn a 30% solar tax credit. Commercial installations can earn additional credits for using U.S.-built components, and there are credits available for installations built in low-income areas or places that used to use coal-generated power.
